Hello!

Welcome to our adventures in growing our food and financial independence.

Yay self-sufficiency and ending the rat race!

Fall Garden Update: Mid-August

Fall Garden Update: Mid-August

Our seeds arrived! So I filled the raised beds, and planted seeds! We also got a few truckloads full of compost into the garden this week! Woot woot!

We started more seedlings to have cabbage, lettuces, and greens, and planted radish, beet, and turnips in the row that was smothered in compost garden gold.

Seeds have me sow excited… : )

I weeded at least another two Mario Carts of weeds. (What better name for a wagon wheelbarrow cart?!)

At dusk, Mario Cart full (top left), with another heap of weeds just out of the photo. Making progress!

It was amazing to find little plants, just plugging along, despite all the weeds. Mother Nature knows what she’s doing, despite what we think she should be doing!

Why hello!

Little baby leaf basil plants

And the little seeds are growing! Thinning plants is a love-hate thing for me. I love that there are so many, and hate to pull what’s just started growing, but love how polished it looks later with everything a bit more orderly. I know Mother Nature is not type A, and I try and remind myself of that constantly, but… : )

We’re really making progress on amending our soil for the fall garden. Two truckloads full of compost later, and our two bed rows are getting there! I need to finish weeding, but it’s amazing to see the difference in elevation from the compost!

Compost heaped on the row on the right to show the height difference; really awesome!

24 Aug: Fall garden is almost ready! Grow seedlings, grow!

The seedlings are doing well, but I want to plant another tray, just in case. If I kill all of those little buggers again, I’m going to feel like this reclaiming effort was all for naught. Better safe than sorry! And the chickens will be happy to help us eat things if we can’t process it all!

Once the two rows are done, we’ll start working on getting our winterizing infrastructure in place. I’ll post an article on that soon! I can’t wait to show you guys the bed rows once they’re done. I’ve never planted a fall garden before, so I’m really excited for this extended growing season!
