CampFIRE Saving Challenge | 10 - 14 August

CampFIRE Saving Challenge | 10 - 14 August

We understand that saving is difficult, not in theory but in practice. We may not realize it but the act of cutting your spending is a lifestyle change. It’s making the conscious decision not to stop at the Starbucks every morning on the way to work. Or not to partake in eating out for lunch everyday.

Here is our challenge to you. For one week…actually just one work week / 5 days, try to cut one of those things from your daily routine.

According to Spruceeats.com, the average cost of a cup of Starbucks coffee is $2.75. But we know those more fancy drinks cost more. Time for a little public math folks…

  • $2.75 x 5 days = $13.75 per work week

  • $13.75 x 4 working weeks = $55.00 per month

PracticalMoneySkills.com did a break down of how much Americans spend on lunch per year and its a doozy! Over a 12 month period, Americans spend nearly $3,000 dollars on lunches. Lets do that public math here.

  • $3000 / 12 months = $250 per month

  • $3000 / 52 weeks = $57.69 per week

  • $3000 / 365 days = $8.21 per day.

Ladies and Gentlemen, in a single month you are probably spending upwards of $300 on just coffee and lunch! If that doesn’t chill you to your core, I’m not sure what will. Now, this simple math is based on the general framing of months, weeks, and days. We understand that you don’t work everyday of the year and that you may give your bank account a break during the weekends…from coffee and lunch that is.

What could you do with roughly $70 per week?

What could you do with an extra $300 per month?

Your small purchases are akin to a slow death by a thousand cuts…

Don’t get us wrong, this is not an exercise in robbing Peter to pay Paul. This is an exercise in building your confidence to save your money. We want you to understand that you DO have enough money…you just have to stop spending it all.

Try it! Its just 5 days.

If you have the courage to try this challenge, tell us what you think.

  • Was it easier than you thought?

  • How did you feel after the week?

  • Did this challenge change the way you view saving money?
